I directed this music video in LA for singer-songwriter, Natalie Cadét, a critically acclaimed artist and a fresh face on the jazz and R&B scene. “Dear Depression” candidly tells the story of her personal mental health journey and was written after she struggled with the condition for many years. Natalie wanted to release the music video during Mental Health Awareness month to help fight against the social stigma and to encourage anyone struggling with mental illness to reach out for the help and support they needed.
Unlike other music videos I’ve been a part of where the song is repeatedly shot in its entirety, I cut this song up and outlined specific shots for each line. I had the whole video storyboarded to great detail, and spent weeks going over every nuance of the song. We also incorporated several Visual Effects into the music video, the most complex of which morphed seamlessly between two tight shots of Natalie’s face. This required detailed planning so that our VFX Supervisor, Jonathan LaPointe, could work his magic.
To say that I could not do what I do without an incredible team around me is an understatement. This is a great example of what can happen when the pros are brought in from the get-go. Their expertise adds that special sauce that brings it all together.
